Cars run on fuel made from household waste could be on the streets in just two years, according to a world-leading chemical company. The British company INEOS aims to produce commercial quantities of bioethanol fuel from biodegradable municipal waste by 2011. Peter Williams, chief executive officer of INEOS Bio said: 'Our technology will make a major contribution to reducing greenhouse gasses and the world's need for fossil fuels.

The Phoenix lander's first taste test of soil near Mars' north pole reveals a briny environment similar to what can be found in backyards on Earth, scientists said Thursday. The finding raises hope that the Martian arctic plains could have conditions favorable for primitive life. Phoenix landed a month ago to study the habitability of Mars' northern latitudes.

A Dutch woman who was the oldest person in the world when she died at age 115 in 2005 appeared sharp right up to the end, joking that pickled herring was the secret to her longevity. Scientists say that Henrikje van Andel-Schipper's mind was probably as good as it seemed: a post-mortem analysis of her brain revealed few signs of Alzheimer's or other diseases commonly associated with a decline in mental ability in old age.

It's the soapy wave of the future for advertising - corporate logos made from rafts of helium bubbles which will float serenely above consumers, selling products as they drift. Francisco Guerra, a special effects technician and former stage magician, is behind the fluffy floating logos - or "Flogos", as they are inevitably called.

Apple likes to top itself with newer versions of already very innovative products. The iPod long has been upgraded, tweaked with and improved upon. Apple is now playing the same update game with its popular Apple iPhone, announcing today some great and major changes to the mobile phone/iPod hybrid. The new Apple iPhone is known as the iPhone 3G. Apple has set July 11 as the release date in 22 countries initially, with more than 70 countries having access to it later this year.
